Brearley Author Sites

You should be
writing.

Not picking a template. Not renewing a plugin. Not wondering why the contact form stopped sending mail three weeks ago. I build author websites and then I keep them running, so the work on your desk stays the work on your desk.

Why this is different

Two fluencies, one person

Most people who build author websites have never written a query letter. Most people who have written a query letter have never opened a deploy log.

I spent thirty years in systems engineering at IBM. I also write novels, edit other people's manuscripts, and run a publishing imprint. That combination is the whole product.

It means your series page is built by someone who knows what a series page has to do for a reader who found you through book four. It means your bio is shaped by someone who has read a few hundred of them.

And it means that when an agent looks you up before answering your email, which she will, the site she finds does not undercut the pages you sent her.

Not your job

What you will never have to do

  • Choose a theme, then discover it does not do series pages
  • Learn a page builder you will use twice a year
  • Install, update, and un-break plugins
  • Buy the same domain twice because the first account went dark
  • Resize your own cover images and headshots
  • Find out from a reader that your contact form stopped working
  • Renew hosting, certificates, or anything with an expiry date
  • Explain to a designer what a novella is

Included

A. L. Fredine. One published collection, four series in progress, and a set of pages that already work for books nobody can buy yet. Built so that nothing needs a redesign when the next one lands.

My own. Three audiences arriving at one front door, each looking for something different, none of them made to hunt for it. You are reading it now.

Amazing work, flexible, custom, exactly what I wanted. A polished, professional website with images and a custom logo—and I didn't have to learn any technology. I am inspired to write more just so I can see my work on my new website! Never been more motivated.

Straight answer

When I am not the right fit

There are author website builders that cost about ten dollars a month. Tertulia builds your site from a single ISBN, importing covers, descriptions, reviews, and retailer links. BookBub runs a similar service with guided setup, dozens of author templates, and email tools attached.

If you have published books, you are comfortable in software, and ten dollars a month sounds better than a thousand dollars once, go use one of them. I would rather tell you that now than take your money and have you work it out later.

And when I am

Where those tools stop

Those tools are built around books that already exist. If your work is finished but not yet published, there is nothing to import, and you are back to filling in blank templates yourself, which was the job you were trying to hand off. Most of the authors I work with are exactly there, with several series written and none of them out.

They also import the book descriptions you already have. They do not write you better ones. I am a developmental editor, so the copy is the part I am best at, and it is the part that decides whether a browser becomes a reader.

And the site is yours. Static files and a domain in your name, portable to any host, rather than a page that exists only for as long as somebody else's company does.

What it costs

Two numbers, no surprises

One time

The build

$1,200

One time, site is yours

Design, writing support, every page, your domain connected, and the site live. Roughly sixteen hours of work at a fixed price, which means the meter never runs and the number never moves. You own the domain and the files.

If the price is the obstacle, say so in your note. I have room for that.

Founding rate: the first five clients pay $795. When the fifth is booked, the rate goes.

Per month, cancel anytime

Hosting, certificate, uptime, and one content update a month. New book, new review, new event, new cover. You send it, I post it.

An update is anything that takes thirty minutes or less, and it does not roll over. Extra updates are $35 each. Anything larger runs at $75 an hour, quoted before I start.
